Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi

Plant Date: April 1st (4 weeks before last average frost date)

Planting: Choose a spot that receives full sunlight. Till in aged compost before planting. The soil should have a pH between 5.5 and 6.8. Plant the seeds 1/2" deep and 2" apart then thin the seedlings to 12". Do not plant with pole beans, strawberries, or tomatoes.

Care: Keep the soil moist. If you let the kohlrabi get too dry they can become woody. The roots are shallow so weed carefully around the plants. You can side dress with compost after a few weeks.

Harvest: Harvest when the bulbs reach desired size. 3" wide is usually a good size, but you can let them get a little bigger if you want. Don't wait too long though, or they may become tough and woody. The greens are also good in soups and salads.
