Broccoli

Broccoli

Plant Date: March 18th (indoors)

Transplant Date: April 15th (two weeks before last average frost date)

Planting: Plant the seeds indoors in early spring. You can plant 3 to a pot and thin the weakest plant. Transplant the seedlings two weeks before the last average frost date. Add some aged compost before planting. Space the plants 24" apart. You'll want to plant them a little deeper than they were originally growing so the stalks won't bend.

Care: Fertilize three weeks after transplanting. Water often and keep the soil moist, but don't get the developing heads wet when watering. The roots are very shallow so be careful when weeding. You may want to cut the weeds at the base or bury them rather than pulling.

Harvest: Harvest the heads when they reach the desired size, but harvest immediately if they begin to turn yellow. Cut the head with about 2-3" of stalk. The plant will send out side shoots which you can also harvest, although these won't get as big as the main head.
